“Quarantine” takes its point of departure from the islet Natvig Minde in Stavanger Harbour. During the nineteenth century, the site served as a quarantine station for ships suspected of carrying cholera. More recently, extensive maritime traffic in the area has also introduced non-native species, such as sea squirt and comb jellyfish, into the harbour basin.
The work includes a quarantine flag and a series of cyanotypes based on excerpts from nineteenth-century quarantine reports from Stavanger. It also presents a silkscreen collage incorporating images from the original handwritten reports alongside representations of invasive species. Through these works, the project examines ideas of otherness, exclusion, and control, drawing connections between historical and contemporary contexts.
